Kindergartners at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School enjoyed an in-school field trip on Oct. 14 when members of the East Norwich Fire Department brought a fire truck to the school parking lot for a hands-on lesson in fire safety. Adding to the fun, the visit happened to fall on pajama day.
Students reviewed important fire safety basics before watching a firefighter demonstrate his protective gear and breathing apparatus. Then it was time for some hands-on learning as students took turns operating the fire hose, with a few even managing to hit the basketball hoop with their spray.
The young learners also had the opportunity to climb into the cab of the fire truck and pose for photos, getting an up-close look at the vehicle and its equipment.
To cap off the memorable visit, each student received a goodie bag and a firefighter helmet of their very own.
