The Locust Valley Central School District Board of Education provided updates on major construction projects, approved substitute administrators for the upcoming school year and answered residents’ questions about parking lot improvements and Freedom of Information Law requests during its Tuesday meeting.
Here are three things to know from the meeting.
1. Construction projects remain on schedule despite weather delays
Superintendent Kristen Turnow said summer construction across the district continues to progress, despite rain delaying work for a couple of days.
Turnow added that an upcoming video will highlight progress on the middle and high school cafeteria renovation, the parking lot project and the district’s new research library center.
Board members echoed that assessment during the facilities committee report, noting that projects remain on track for the start of the school year. The board also discussed a change order related to the high school and middle school parking lot. Trustees said the work remains within the project’s existing budget by using allocated allowance funds.
2. District expands communications strategy
The board announced that the district will expand its partnership with Arc Communications beginning in September as part of an effort to increase communication with residents.
Trustees and district officials explained the firm had already been assisting the district, including helping develop a new slogan.
“Starting September, we will be moving completely to Arc,” Turnow reiterated, “and really looking to expand our communications, especially with more live videos for our community members to really see our children imagine.”
Turnow noted that previous construction update videos had generated strong community engagement and encouraged residents to watch the next installment once it is released.
3. Board approves substitute administrators
The board approved its consent agenda, including appointments of substitute administrators for the coming school year.
During discussion, trustees explained the substitutes serve only as a backup when existing administrators cannot cover an absence.
District officials also explained the substitutes are called only after internal coverage options have been exhausted and are paid according to the district’s negotiated per diem salary schedule.
Before adjourning, the board reminded residents that a tentative special meeting is scheduled for Aug. 24 to address any remaining personnel or contractual matters needed before the start of the school year.
