Beautifying Maple Ave

Thanks to village resident Mike Davey, the intersection of Maple and Powell avenues is looking much nicer. And if he gets his way, the rest of the road will follow.

After the roadwork was completed on Maple Avenue earlier this year, Davey wanted to do something to make it look even better. Rather than just having the corners at intersections being brick and concrete, he thought it would be nice if there were plants there.

Davey had some previous success in cleaning village streets: he worked to clean a section of Sunrise Highway between Long Beach and Oceanside roads.

He spoke to the mayor and got permission to beautify the intersection of Maple and Powell. Out of his own pocket, Davey purchased plants and planted them on both sides of the intersection.

“[Leaving the intersections concrete] is going to make everything look bland,” Davey said. “If you put this out there to different people and businesses, you might have them take care of their own piece and save the village some money.”

The idea to beautify the intersection was so popular with people in the area that many contributed money to Davey to help pay for it. He envisions that as a method for the village to beautify the rest of the street.

“Maybe after they see this,” he said, “they’ll let me do another piece.”

Davey said that many people helped finance his work. The included Howie Feinstein, Waldy Lindemann, and the Woods, Murphy, Kelly, Sheppard, Oswald, Laufer, Pinchioni, Bingham, Pericolosi and Craigh families.
