A two-car crash at the intersection of Merrick Road and North Park Avenue Thursday afternoon knocked down a light pole and sent one of the vehicles onto the sidewalk  near front of Saltano’s Pizzeria.

The call reporting the accident came in at 1:45 p.m., officials said. First responders arrived at the scene within minutes.

One of the vehicles knocked down a light pole on the northwest corner of the intersection before coming to rest on the sidewalk in front of the pizzeria. The vehicle did not make contact with the building, nor were any pedestrians struck, officials said.

Three people received medical treatment at the scene, according to village officials. It was not immediately known whether any of them were transported to a hospital.

Rockville Centre resident Carolyn Stone arrived at the intersection shortly after the crash, after leaving Concord Jewelers nearby. Although she did not witness the collision itself, she said people had already begun gathering near the scene when she came outside.

“I came out and people were starting to gather, and I looked over and I saw it,” Stone said. “Then the ambulance came, and the cop cars, and the local fire department.”

Stone said the emergency response appeared to happen quickly.

Stone observed a woman sitting in the back passenger side of one of the vehicles and said it appeared that first responders were also tending to someone on the sidewalk in front of the pizzeria.

The circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately clear. But based on the positions of the vehicles after the crash, Stone said she believed one vehicle may have been traveling north on North Park Avenue and attempting to turn left onto westbound Merrick Road, while the other was traveling south on North Park and making a right turn.

However, Stone emphasized that she did not see the collision occur.
