First graders at Floyd B. Watson Elementary School traded backpacks for bedtime gear on April 23, arriving in colorful pajamas for a cozy and imaginative Pajama Bedtime Story Night. The young students filled the room in everything from superhero-themed sets to soft teddy bear prints and sports-inspired designs, creating a relaxed atmosphere that blended school spirit with the comfort of home.
The highlight of the evening came as teacher Sarah Simon gathered the group for a read-aloud of “Splat the Cat Dreams Big” by Rob Scotton. The story follows Splat, a nervous young cat who struggles to fall asleep after a bad nightmare, only to learn how to face his fears with encouragement from his mother and his loyal mouse friend, Seymour.
Simon’s animated reading kept the students engaged throughout, with many listening intently and reacting to Splat’s journey from fear to bravery. The book’s message about overcoming nighttime worries resonated with the audience, offering both comfort and a gentle lesson about courage and reassurance.
The students also took part in a hands-on activity, creating their own dream catchers. With a mix of colors and materials, each child crafted a unique piece to take home, tying the evening’s theme of sweet dreams and overcoming fears into a creative keepsake.
