It’s back — 5th grade trip set for May

Group planning two fundraisers, including Adult Comedy Night in September

With the blessing of school administrators, a group of local parents are working to restore the fifth grade overnight trip, a once-annual rite of spring for every fifth grader in the Rockville Centre school district that had fallen victim to difficult budget choices in recent years. Just last week, the “Fifth Grade Outdoor Education Fundraising Committee,” that was formed to raise the money necessary to bring back the trip, announced that it will indeed return in 2012, and that an overnight excursion to the New York YMCA Greenkill Outdoor Education Center, open to all fifth grade students in the district, is set for May 29 and 30.

To offset the cost of this and future trips, the committee is planning two fundraisers. The first is an Adult Comedy Night set for Friday, Sept. 23 at South Side Middle School. Members of the committee plan advanced ticket sales for the event, with tickets going for $30 each or $50 for two. Due to the limited seating in the middle school’s auditorium, tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis, committee members said.

The Adult Comedy Night (for those 18 and older) will start at 7 p.m., with refreshments, 50/50 raffles and gift baskets for sale in the lobby.

The show will follow, at 8 p.m., with America’s funniest fireman, comedian John Larocchia kicking things off. Carie Karavas, one of long Island’s most talented female comics, will be up next and the energetic and expressive Eric Tartaglione and impressionist John Santo will also perform.

To order tickets, send a check made out to the “RVC School District” to: Fifth Grade Outdoor Education Fundraiser c/o Covert Elementary School, 379 Willow St., South Hempstead, N.Y. 11550. Anyone interested in donating can send checks to the same address. Tickets will also be available at each of Rockville Centre’s elementary schools — after the start of the school year on Sept. 6.

The second fundraiser is a 5K race that organizers say will take place sometime in the spring. The committee said it will provide additional details about the fundraisers throughout the summer, but it is asking readers to spread the word.
