The Maple Lanes team is proving that success is measured by more than wins and losses this season in the National League.
Under coach Joe Muir, the team has built a strong foundation through teamwork, positivity, and steady improvement, traits that were on full display during a well-played 5-5 tie against the DJ Hannon team on May 9.
“It was a great game,” Muir said of his team’s ninth game of the season. “The boys played great.”
Maple Lanes delivered one of its strongest offensive performances of the year, collecting 11 hits in the tie. Matt McCarthy led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, while Will Grande added two hits.
The offensive output reflected the growth Muir has seen from the group throughout the season.
“They’re doing great,” Muir said. “All the boys are having a fun time.”
That positive atmosphere has become one of the team’s defining characteristics. Muir said one of his proudest accomplishments as coach has been watching the players consistently encourage and support one another, regardless of the score.
“All of the boys and their positive attitudes and support for each other on the team,” he said when asked about what has stood out the most about the season.
One player who has especially impressed the coaching staff is Kelvin Soto. According to Muir, Soto entered the year with strong natural ability but has elevated his game through hard work and dedication.
“Kelvin Soto was a really good baseball player to start,” Muir said. “He had a lot of skills, but he’s really stepped up his game to the next level this season.”
