The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center’s summer program came to an emotional close last week, as children gathered for the center’s annual Summer Program Talent Show and celebrated the friendships, experiences and memories they made throughout the season.
The show on Aug. 20 featured plenty of singing and group dance routines, giving the children an opportunity to take the spotlight in front of their peers, families and center staff. Other performers showcased their physical skills, including jump-rope routines and activities that involved running through hula hoops on the ground.
The performances reflected the wide range of activities that are part of the center’s summer program, which combines recreation, arts and crafts, swimming and other activities for local children.
The talent show was also a chance for the children to display artwork they had created during the summer. Their projects were exhibited throughout the center, providing another glimpse into the creativity and effort they had put into the program over the previous weeks.
Community Center Director Patrick Morris, who oversees the MLK Center’s programming, and Rockville Centre Mayor Francis X. Murray was also on hand for the celebration. The center, at 150 N. Centre Ave., offers a variety of youth programs throughout the year in addition to its summer program.
