Maple Avenue work illogical

To the Editor:

Congratulations all around for the completion of Maple Avenue. What is the purpose, though, of the “bumpouts” at the corners? I read that they were to keep pedestrians safe. How?

They are fingers of concrete jutting out into the roadway just waiting to bend a few wheel rims, as well as making for some tight turns for drivers. How well-thought-out was this plan?

Moved by Suozzi’s tribute to Mario Cuomo

To the Editor:

Re Tom Suozzi’s column “A late governor’s words meant the world to me” (Jan. 15-21): It was just so refreshing to read a politician’s words of praise, not only for the giant that was Mario Cuomo, but for the mentor that he was for Suozzi. Much has been said about Cuomo’s fabulous career, the heights he attained and the one he didn’t. But it’s Suozzi’s personality and genuine sense of appreciation for one who came before that remains with me.

I voted for Suozzi both when he won and when he lost, but it’s only now that I feel I know the man he is. I do hope he’ll stand for office again sometime; we have so few individuals of character from whom to choose as our representatives.
