Checkmate Chess Club helps students build skills through lessons, matches and mentorship

The next great chess move may be happening every Monday night at the Rockville Centre Public Library, where young players are learning that the game is about more than just moving pieces across a board — it is about strategy, patience and thinking several steps ahead.

The Checkmate Chess Club brings together students entering grades 2 through 6 for weekly in-person sessions designed to introduce beginners to the iconic game while helping experienced players sharpen their abilities. Led by professional chess player and coach Jack Niculescu, the program gives participants the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of chess while exploring more advanced techniques.

Alongside the young chess players, the program also relies on teen volunteers who help create a supportive and encouraging environment for participants. Through the library’s Board Game Helpers program, students entering grades 7 through 12 volunteer their time to play games with younger children, offering guidance, encouragement and a friendly face as they learn new strategies and enjoy the experience.

Before the matches begin, Niculescu works with the group on different concepts, discussing tactics, positioning and ways players can improve their decision-making during a game. After the strategy lessons, the students put their knowledge into action as they pair up with opponents for friendly matches.

The club gives young chess enthusiasts the opportunity to challenge themselves, learn from their mistakes and build confidence with each turn they take.

Whether they are learning how each piece moves for the first time or looking to strengthen their competitive abilities, participants are encouraged to think critically and embrace the challenge of the game. The weekly sessions allow students to develop problem-solving skills while connecting with other chess enthusiasts in the community.

The weekly sessions run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
