The Mary Ruchalski Foundation is preparing to host its sixth annual Mary 5K, continuing its mission to raise awareness and funds in the fight against pediatric cancer while bringing the community together in support of families facing the disease.
The event has become a meaningful tradition for the foundation, drawing strong participation from local residents and running clubs. This mix of participants helps create a lively, inclusive atmosphere while expanding awareness of the foundation’s mission.
“What I like about it is that a lot of RVC people in our community come to the event,” Carol Ruchalski, the mother of the late Mary Ruchalski and the foundation’s creator, said. “It’s nice to have a wide variety of people come out to run in support of the foundation.”
Each year, the 5K attracts between 200 and 300 runners, with more than 300 participants attending last year’s event. In addition to the main race, a children’s race makes the event especially family friendly.
“I believe last year we had over 300 runners,” Ruchalski said. “We did so well, and we have a kids’ race, so that’s fun.”
Local students, particularly from South Side High School, play a key role in supporting the event, with teams participating as both runners and volunteers.
“We usually get a lot of kids from South Side High School who support us,” she said. “Various teams come out.”
The foundation hopes to raise about $5,000 through this year’s race — hitting 5K for the 5K.
A returning sponsor, the Talbot family, has once again provided race T-shirts, helping offset costs and maximize the impact of donations.
Beyond fundraising, the 5K serves as an opportunity to bring people together in support of children and families facing pediatric cancer while honoring Mary’s legacy.
Participants like Bryan Brady of Roslyn Heights are preparing for the race alongside family members.
“I’m looking forward to seeing people come out, seeing Fran and Carol,” Brady said. “But especially seeing the young people — those who knew Mary. It’s good to see them.”
The event’s energy and shared purpose — from seasoned runners to young children — have made the Mary 5K one of the foundation’s most anticipated gatherings each year.
The race will take place at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow on April 11, with check-in beginning at 8 a.m. Participants will receive complimentary bottled water, access to live race results via text or email, and free finish-line photos.
Raffles will also be held, and all registered participants will be entered for a chance to win a $100 American Express gift card.
As the foundation prepares for another strong turnout, organizers say the goal remains the same: to bring people together, honor Mary’s memory, and continue the fight against pediatric cancer.
