The Girl Scouts of Nassau County has elected Rockville Centre resident Onika Shepard-Bernabe to serve on its Board Development Committee through 2028.
Shepard-Bernabe was officially sworn in during the organization's 61st Annual Meeting, held at Nassau Community College in Garden City.
The Board Development Committee is made up of lifelong Girl Scouts, community leaders and nonprofit and corporate executives who provide leadership and strategic guidance to the council while helping advance its mission. The committee is responsible for identifying, recruiting and supporting future board and committee members, as well as fostering opportunities for girls across Nassau County to develop courage, confidence and character.
"Each year, Girl Scouts of Nassau County is strengthened by leaders who bring new perspective, deep community commitment and a shared belief in what girls can achieve," Rande Bynum, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Nassau County, said in a statement. "These board and committee members will help guide our council as we continue creating opportunities for girls to lead with courage, confidence and character across Nassau County."
Shepard-Bernabe has worked in the labor movement for more than two decades with 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, where she has served as political director for Long Island for the past six years.
In that role, she has led member engagement initiatives, community outreach programs, and political campaigns aligned with the organization's goals. According to Girl Scouts of Nassau County, her leadership has produced measurable results, and she has been a longtime supporter of Girl Scouts' programs and initiatives.
