First-graders found a new friend to look up to, while fifth graders had a chance to become role models, as Riverside Elementary School’s Buddy Day brought students together for a morning of friendship, breakfast and new beginnings.

Held on Sept. 25, the event kicked off Riverside’s First and Fifth Grade Buddy Program, a school tradition that pairs the youngest students with older classmates for activities throughout the school year. Students shared breakfast and met their buddies, beginning relationships that will continue in the months ahead.

“The program is about so much more than having fun,” Riverside Principal Chris Zappia said. “It’s about building relationships, developing leadership skills, and creating a strong sense of community.”

Throughout the school year, the buddy pairs will participate in activities such as holiday crafts and classroom projects, giving fifth-graders opportunities to support their younger partners while fostering connections across grade levels.
