Longtime Rockville Centre Police dispatcher Barbara Daley retired at the end of December after nearly 30 years with the department. Hers was one of voices residents heard when calling police headquarters for help or information.

Hired in September 1981 as the department’s first civilian dispatcher, Daley began working full time in July 1985. She worked with three commissioners and watched numerous officers complete their training and advance through the ranks.

“Barbara has been a loyal employee of the village for three decades,” said Rockville Centre Police Commissioner Charles Gennario. “The department will miss her experience and dedication.”

On her last day, dispatcher Daley said, “I always say I have 54 husbands. Now I’m divorcing 53 of them and keeping the one I’ve been married to for almost 40 years.”

Daley moved to Rockville Centre from Queens in 1979 with her husband Tom, and two daughters, Tricia and Tara.
