District inks two contracts

At the school board meeting on Feb. 23, Assistant Superintendent for Business Robert Bartels announced that the Board of Education has recently reached agreement on contracts with two unions — the CSEA (Custodial and Maintenance) and the OSA (Office Staff Association). Both contracts are for four years retroactive to July 1, 2009.

The salary increases in the OSA contract for each year are 0 percent, 0 percent, 3 percent and 3 percent. In addition, OSA health insurance contributions will increase from 7 percent to 10 percent over the life of the contract.

The CSEA contract calls for yearly salary increases of 0 percent, 3 percent, 3 percent and 3 percent. CSEA members’ health insurance contributions will increase from 8 percent to 10 percent over the life of the contract.

What's in a name?

School board president Mark Masin addressed the question of why the Rockville Centre school district uses the designation “Union Free” when in fact it has unions.

The answer is that “Union Free” is one of New York state's official designations for a district formed from one of more common school districts to operate a high school. Other state school district designations include: a Common School District that operates elementary schools from grades K-8; a Central School District formed by combining Common, Union Free and Central districts that may operate a high school; a Central High School District providing only secondary education from two or more common or union free districts; a City School District having boundary lines identical to a city; a Special Act School District that is created by a "special act" of the Legislature mainly to educate students for unique reasons who cannot be served in a traditional public school system and a Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) which is a voluntary cooperative association of school districts in a geographic area to provide educational or business services more economically than each district could offer by itself.
