More than 100 people gathered at Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David for its annual Shabbat Across America celebration, an event that brought together synagogues across North America to mark the tradition of Shabbat with a shared sense of community.
The March 13 program is part of a continent-wide initiative organized by the nonprofit National Jewish Outreach Program, encouraging hundreds of congregations to participate in a welcoming and accessible spiritual experience. This year’s theme, “CommUNITY,” emphasized inclusivity, family and connection among participants.
The evening featured a musical Shabbat service known as Shabbat Soul, led by Cantor Alty Weinreib. Held monthly, the service blends traditional prayers with contemporary musical elements, including guitar and percussion, creating an atmosphere designed to be both reflective and uplifting.
Congregation member Al Weiser accompanied on guitar.
The service encouraged active participation, with attendees singing along and, by the conclusion, joining in a spirited dance that moved through the room. The program concluded with a traditional Shabbat dinner shared by attendees.
Jill Kaplan, the congregation’s corresponding secretary, also announced the winners of the Super Bowl-a-Thon fundraiser held at Maple Lanes in Rockville Centre on Super Bowl Sunday. Prizes were awarded to Dave Kaufman for the highest score, Brandon Melendez for the lowest score, and Bonnie Friedman for raising the most money.
