Town of Hempstead Hall to close Monday, March 16, because of coronavirus case

Hempstead Town Hall, at 1 Washington and 350 Front streets, will be closed Monday, March 16. The decision, which is at the recommendation of the Nassau County Health Department, was made "out of the abundance of caution for the safety of the public and co-workers" after the town was notified that a coronavirus case was linked to the facility, according to a town release.

A decision will be made Monday if Town Hall will reopen on Tuesday, as the town disinfects the facility. Officials noted, though, that the town had already been conducting "deep cleaning." If the facility must be closed longer, the town will provide updates as necessary.

The following are other facility closures and event cancellations now in effect:

·      All town senior centers (Baldwin, Bellmore, Elmont, Franklin Square, Green Acres, Hempstead, Levittown, Merrick, Oceanside, Rosa Parks, Salisbury-East Meadow, Uniondale-Hempstead, Uniondale-Merrick and Wantagh).

·      Echo Park Pool, West Hempstead.

·      Newbridge Indoor Ice Rink Arena, Bellmore.

Effective March 16, all Department of Parks and Recreation activities, meetings, community room activities, physical fitness classes, cultural arts classes, youth programs and Camp Anchor activities are postponed until further notice.

Other postponed events include: The Passport Day in the Five Towns program, originally scheduled for March 22, and all Taxpayer forums for March.

All town parks and golf courses remain open at this time functioning at normal operating hours. Other town departments remain operational, including the Town of Hempstead Water Department, the Hempstead Town Tax Office, and the Department of Sanitation. Sanitation and recycling schedules remain as before.
