Maria Regina welcomes community at open house

Posted

Maria Regina, a Catholic elementary school in Seaford, host families from Wantagh, Seaford and beyond at an open house program on Jan. 29.

The open house was held in conjunction with Catholic Schools Week. Current students showed off classroom projects and artwork to prospective parents, who gathered information about the school’s programs.

Principal Leona Arpino said that Maria Regina, on Jerusalem Avenue, takes in students from surrounding neighborhoods such as Wantagh, Levittown and Massapequa. Families from Suffolk County communities like Amityville, Copiague and Babylon are also drawn to the school.

“We try to focus on the best things that we have to offer here at Maria Regina and the things that make us different compared to other schools in the area,” Arpino said. “Every year we try to either increase the curriculum or social and spiritual programs.”

At the open house, teachers and parents were on hand to answer questions about the quality of education that students receive. Arpino noted that faith is part of lessons and classroom activities, as well as technology. For instance, she said, students use tools like Google Chrome Books.

“It extends their learning and makes it go beyond the classroom,” Arpino explained. “Every student is able to access different apps or websites and can work on assignments at home, using Google Classroom.”
