Gov. David Paterson’s dire warning last week of a $5 billion deficit in the state budget over the next two years, and his plans to address it, drew a swift — and negative —response from local officials. The governor’s plan calls for a $3 billion reduction in state spending in the current fiscal year, ending March 30, and includes a reduction in state aid to schools by about $690 million. more

Former Rockville Centre resident Linda Breitstone is set to be honored at Island Harvest’s 16th annual Taste of the Harvest celebration, on Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. In what has become one of Long Island’s best known, and widely attended fundraisers, the “Taste of the Harvest” will raise money to help Island Harvest in its fight against hunger on Long Island. more

On Oct. 13, the Island Park Civic Association held a meeting with local officials to address the community's concern about sex offenders temporarily living at the Long Beach Motor Inn on Austin Boulevard. Concerns arose after the civic association learned there had been four sex offenders staying at the motel over the last few months. more
