The Central High Lady Eagles entered the 2014 softball season looking to erase the pain of falling a game short of a spot in the playoffs a year ago. A run of seven wins over an eight-game stretch certainly gave the Lady Eagles reason for optimism, however a few tough losses over the last couple of weeks left VSC on the outside looking in at the postseason.

With both teams headed to the Nassau Class AA softball playoffs and only seeding at stake in last Friday’s Conference AA-II matchup, visiting Long Beach used a three-run rally in the top of the fourth inning to break a tie with Baldwin and never looked back in a 9-2 victory.

It was fitting the game ended with the ball in Meghan Montine’s glove. Lynbrook’s senior center fielder did it all last Friday afternoon to help lead the Lady Owls to an important 8-7 victory over visiting Valley Stream South in a Nassau Conference AB-VI softball matchup. Montine reached base three times, stole three bases, scored three runs, made a diving catch, and threw out a runner at the plate.

Clarke has its ace in the circle, sophomore pitcher Sarah Cornell, and there’s always a good chance the Lady Rams’ opponents are going to come up empty at the plate. Cornell has three career no-hitters under her belt, including a 2-0 victory over South Side on April 12 that included 15 strikeouts.

Making a myopic view of the season, it would seem that Calhoun has taken some recent lumps on the softball field, dropping five straight games—the most recent a 10-3 decision to Oceanside on April 14 — after a 5-1 start.
