Prior to the excitement of last Sunday’s Long Island Marathon, there was complete silence for 26 seconds — one second for each mile in a marathon. The moment of silence was held to commemorate the victims of the bombings during the Boston Marathon on April 15.

Long Island troubadour and anti-hunger activist Harry Chapin died in a crash on the Long Island Expressway 30 years ago. On Monday evening, Long Island musical artists gathered at East Meadow’s Eisenhower Park to perform a concert and food drive in tribute to the late singer-songwriter, playing his songs for the cause to which he was dedicated.

Thomas Crotty stood and stared for a moment on Friday at the twisted, rusted, 1,600-pound steel girder in front of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Brookside School in North Merrick. “It was very thoughtful of the community and the young people to do this so the day and the people will not be forgotten,” Crotty remarked.
