The Valley Stream Fire Department placed second in the best appearance category in the Nassau County Fire Chief’s Association Parade in Merrick last Saturday evening.

Thursday was dig-out day throughout the South Shore after a near-blizzard smacked the area from late Tuesday through early Thursday morning. Almost a foot and a half of heavy, wet snow pressed down on roofs, cars, streets and parks, closing schools for most students and bringing shoveling chores to most adults. Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey has announced that for the thirty one hour period from 12:01 a.m. Feb. 10, through 7 a.m. Feb. 11, there were 190 auto accidents in the Nassau County. Of those, 34 resulted in injuries.

Valley Stream Post Office holding food drive

The Valley Stream Post Office has begun its annual spring food drive. Residents can drop off food in a collection bin near the entrance to the post office, located at the corner of Franklin and Hawthorne avenues, through May 16.

One-stop holiday shopping at Central

The Central/Memorial PTSA hosted its annual holiday boutique and craft fair last Saturday afternoon. There were dozens of vendors who took up two gymnasiums at Central High School. The sellers had many handmade holiday gifts and treats. Money raised from the event will go toward scholarships for graduating seniors and other PTSA-sponsored events.

The village of Valley Stream held its annual tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 10 outside of Village Hall. There was a musical performance from Central High School Tri-M honor society students, treats and a chance for children to send their letters to Santa.

Valley Stream kids go hunting for eggs

Valley Stream children went hunting for Easter eggs last Saturday morning at Hendrickson Park. The annual event drew 75 kids.
