Caribbean music brings a twist to line dancing at Uniondale Public Library

Posted

Community members gathered outside the Uniondale Public Library on June 20 to celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month and Black Music History through an afternoon of line dancing.

While line dancing is traditionally associated with Western country music, however, it was adapted across different cultures. Caribbean communities have embraced the dance form, creating routines set to energetic musical genres such as reggae, soca, calypso and dancehall.

Participants of all ages learned dance steps, enjoyed music and came together to honor the rich cultural traditions and contributions of Caribbean communities. The event encouraged community engagement while highlighting the lasting influence of music and dance on cultural expression.

The celebration continues Saturday with the library’s fifth annual Caribbean Heritage Black Music History Celebration Concert. Families are invited to enjoy a live performance by Twyla Joi & Jamila Band, whose music highlighted the cultural traditions and musical contributions of Caribbean and Black communities. The concert serves as a continuation of the day’s festivities, bringing residents together through music, culture and community celebration.
