First day of school brings students, families and teachers back to classrooms across Uniondale

Students across the Uniondale School District returned to classrooms Sept. 2, beginning a new school year with greetings from teachers, administrators and staff.

At Northern Parkway Elementary School, students arrived as families dropped them off and gathered outside the building to see them off. Teachers and staff welcomed children through the doors and helped them settle into their classrooms and the routines of a new academic year.

As students and teachers entered the building they were welcomed by a red balloon arch. On the lawn families were able to stop to take first-day photos before saying goodbye and sending students inside.

Similar scenes unfolded throughout the district at California Avenue, Cornelius Court, Grand Avenue, Smith Street and Walnut Street elementary schools, as well as Lawrence Road and Turtle Hook middle schools and Uniondale High School.

Superintendent Monique Darrisaw-Akil made an appearance at Lawrence Road and Northern Parkway.

The first day followed several back-to-school efforts across Uniondale aimed at helping students begin the year prepared. The district’s My Brother’s Keeper program hosted its fourth annual back-to-school drive at Lawrence Road and Turtle Hook middle schools, distributing bookbags and supplies with help from community organizations and volunteers.
