3 things to know about Uniondale Library events for October

Posted

Uniondale Public Library has a full slate of programs planned for October, ranging from astronomy and wellness to artificial intelligence and business development. Here are three things to know about what’s coming up.

  1. Look to the night sky                             Uniondale residents can get a closer look at the night sky during “Jupiter Occultation and Star Cluster Conjunctions” on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Astronomer Larry Gerstman will discuss an upcoming celestial event in which the crescent moon will hide Jupiter on Oct. 6. The program will also give attendees an opportunity to learn more about other objects visible in the night sky. If weather conditions cooperate, participants will head outside and use a telescope to observe Saturn, star clusters and the moon, putting some of what they learned during the presentation into practice.
  2. Explore AI and its everyday uses                    Artificial intelligence takes center stage at the library on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 7 to 8 p.m. during “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT.” Joshua Varon, of Varon Consulting, will introduce attendees to what AI is, how the technology works and some of the ways ChatGPT can be incorporated into everyday tasks. The presentation will cover uses including writing, learning, planning and problem-solving. Business owners can continue exploring the technology. The library will host a series of business workshops presented by Score. One will be AI for small businesses on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.

  3. Put health and wellness first                 Health and wellness will be a recurring theme at the library throughout October. Dr. Sharon Koehler, chief of breast surgery at Mercy Hospital, will discuss the importance of early breast cancer detection on Oct. 1. Additional programs will explore meditation as a healing practice, yoga and strategies to help older adults remain safe, independent and engaged. The month’s health programming will also include a Cancer Awareness Celebration musical performance on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Cancer survivor Roxanne Steele and friends will perform a musical tribute honoring breast cancer and blood cancer survivors.
