Uniondale High School parents host annual Juneteenth celebration event

Dozens of Uniondale residents, most of the school district gathered at Uniondale High School on June 13 to celebrate Juneteenth early for the Uniondale High School PTA’s annual Juneteenth celebration, an event that combined cultural performances, vendors and community fellowship.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The day is recognized as the nation’s oldest celebration of the end of slavery and became a federal holiday in 2021.

Hosted by the Uniondale High School PTA, the celebration featured live entertainment by Uniondale students at California Avenue School, , food vendors and activities highlighting African American history, culture and achievements.
