Long Island Children’s Museum celebrates Pi Day with hands-on learning and pie toss

Visitors at the Long Island Children’s Museum in marked Pi Day on March 14 with a mix of hands-on learning and messy fun, highlighted by a crowd-favorite pie toss.

Families throughout the museum took part in a range of math-themed activities designed to make the concept of  the infinite number represented by 3.14 more engaging and accessible. Children created circle-inspired crafts, including bracelets and hats, while others joined scavenger hunts and problem-solving challenges focused on geometry and patterns.

The celebration also featured interactive performances and movement-based activities, with music, dancing and hula hoops reinforcing the day’s theme of circles. A performance by the Double Dutch Divas drew crowds, adding energy to an event that blended education with entertainment.

The pie toss, however, proved to be the highlight for many attendees. Wearing protective goggles, participants lined up to toss whipped-cream pies, turning the mathematical celebration into a lively, hands-on experience that encouraged both laughter and learning.

The pie toss was separated by two teams – blue and red. The colors come from the museums Pixar Disney exhibit, inside out to feature feelings.

“Pi Day is one of our favorite celebrations because it shows that big ideas — like infinity — can be explored through creativity, movement, laughter, and hands-on discovery,” said Aimee Terzulli, vice president of program and visitor experience.

The Pi Day celebration was sponsored by JPMorgan Chase.
