Despite rainy weather forcing the Uniondale’s annual Memorial Day event indoors, Uniondale residents, veterans and local officials gathered Monday to honor the nation’s fallen service members during the community’s Memorial Day ceremony.
This year, there was no Grand Marshal, however the Uniondale JROTC and Uniondale Fire Department made their way inside Uniondale High School’s auditorium. The annual observance featured tributes to military members who died while serving in the armed forces, with veterans organizations, elected officials and community leaders recognizing the sacrifices made by generations of Americans.
The JROTC presented the color guard, while the president of the American Legion joined other local leaders and veterans in delivering remarks including Presiding Elder of Grace Cathedral, David Sweet, also, an U.S. Army veteran centered on remembrance, service and the importance of honoring those who gave their lives in defense of the country.
The ceremony maintained its solemn tone despite the venue change, with attendees filling the indoor space to pay respects ahead of the unofficial start of summer. Veterans were recognized throughout the program, and speakers encouraged younger generations to remember the meaning behind Memorial Day beyond parades and gatherings.
The annual event was organized with support from local veterans groups and community organizations.
