September brings plenty of opportunities to learn something new, focus on your well-being or simply get creative at the Uniondale Public Library. From sewing, folk art and crochet to health seminars, yoga and tai chi, the library’s calendar offers programs for a range of interests. Here are three things to know about what’s happening at the library this month.
Get crafty this September with three hands-on programs at the Uniondale Public Library. On Sept. 14, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., adults can join instructor Jessica in the Computer Room for a sewing workshop. Participants will make a pillowcase while practicing their sewing machine skills, with materials provided for one pillowcase per person. On Sept. 17, art instructor Lisa Colon will offer Mexican Tin Folk Art in the Meeting Room, giving participants an opportunity to explore the traditional art form and create a piece of their own. Then, on Sept. 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Janice Imbrogno will teach the basics of crochet, including hand positioning, tension and basic stitches. Participants will put their new skills to use by crocheting a phone case using the single crochet stitch.
Explore ways to support your physical and emotional well-being with three health-focused programs at the Uniondale Public Library. Maria Lören and Chantae of Melanin & Muscles will lead a sensory self-care experience designed to help women reduce stress and reconnect through their senses. Participants will learn simple ways to create a personal sensory self-care routine and take home a mini kit to continue the experience. On Sept. 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Dr. Chisom Iwuanyanwu of Long Island Vision Care will lead a seminar on caring for your vision, with a focus on recognizing and managing myopia, or nearsightedness. On Sept. 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Computer Room, Dr. Dipa Avichal, an endocrinologist with Catholic Health, will discuss diabetes, including its causes and warning signs, diagnosis and treatment options.
Stay active and find time to relax with three exercise and wellness programs at the Uniondale Public Library. On Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Bookmark Cafe, adults can practice Tai Chi with Mr. Cheng. Registration is required, and the activity is part of a long term series that costs $15.50 per participant. On Sept. 18 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Meeting Room, instructor Vicky will introduce participants to basic Iyengar Yoga techniques. All skill levels are welcome, and participants should bring their own yoga mats and water bottles. On Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room, the Isha Foundation will offer Yoga with Meditation for adults and new adults. Registration is required.
