After a Town of Hempstead board meeting on in June, the board proposed the new traffic pattern signs in Uniondale. The proposal passed in a Aug. 4 board meeting. Residents can now see the changes to parking regulations on neighborhood streets as the town made updates to existing rules. The proposals affect portions of Pembroke Street, Gilroy Avenue and Braxton Street, including overnight parking, no-parking and no-stopping zones.
Overnight parking would be prohibited on Pembroke Street from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on the north side of the street, beginning west of Arcadia Avenue and continuing for roughly 90 feet. The location is new Kellenberg Memorial High School. The change will replace an existing restriction on the same stretch that prohibits parking from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on school days. The “no stopping here to corner” sign will remain. That regulation is repealed, effectively shifting the parking restriction from school hours to overnight hours.
Drivers who park along Gilroy Avenue will see changes near its intersection with Pembroke Street. This spot is near Kellenberg Memorial High School and Hofstra University.. The town has proposed expanding an existing no-parking-anytime zone on the west side of Gilroy Avenue. The current restriction covers 100 feet, while the proposed regulation would extend the restricted area to 172 feet. The change also established a new 37-foot no-parking-anytime zone on the east side of Gilroy Avenue, beginning 95 feet north of Pembroke Street.
New stopping and parking restrictions for Braxton Street near Uniondale Avenue. The location is near Walnut Street Elementary School and Uniondale High School. The town is prohibiting stopping along the south side of Braxton Street for 45 feet east of Uniondale Avenue. Immediately after that section, parking is prohibited at all times for another 61 feet. Together, the two restrictions affect about 106 consecutive feet of Braxton Street east of Uniondale Avenue, although the first section would carry the more restrictive no-stopping designation.
