Three Things to Know about Rhythm of The Knights

Show choir to present MOTOWN Review for Nov. 13

Posted

Uniondale High School’s Rhythm of the Knight show choir continues to showcase student talent through music, dance and theatrical performances. Led by Lynette Carr-Hicks, a Westbury native who received the 2018 Music Educator of Note Award from the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame. The ensemble has become a standout part of the school’s performing arts program. Carr-Hicks brings experience in music education and Off-Broadway productions to her work with the group. The choir performs at the high school during the holidays and is currently preparing for “Motown Review,” which will premiere on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at the high school.

Showcase student talent

Uniondale’s Rhythm of the Knight show choir consists of high school students, including 10-year-old twins Eva and RJ Campbell Jr. of California Avenue Elementary School. The group brings together more than two dozen students with a passion for singing and theatrical performance.

Under the direction of Carr-Hicks, Colton Wynter and Joe Boardman, the group combines vocal arrangements, choreography and stage production that highlight students’ creativity and teamwork.

The show choir offers students an opportunity to develop their musical abilities while building confidence, discipline and collaboration skills. Through rehearsals and competitions, students get the chance to represent Uniondale beyond the classroom. The program has also earned recognition for its performances, demonstrating the strength of the school’s performing arts opportunities.

Top honors at FAME Orlando

In March 2024, Rhythm of the Knight was named Grand Champion at the FAME Orlando Show Choir of America competition, earning national recognition for Uniondale High School’s performing arts program.

Competing against three other show choirs, the group took home the competition’s highest honor, along with awards for best vocals, choreography, set and visuals. Student Cody Dumpson also received the Best Male Stage Presence award.

“I was in shock when they called our names,” Carr-Hicks said in a 2024 press release. “It was unbelievable. I am so proud of all of them. The next stop is nationals!”

The victory marked a milestone for the program and set the stage for its next challenge: preparing for national competition. The group also sought community support and fundraising assistance to help students continue competing on a larger stage.
