The Uniondale Empowerment Resource Center brought families, businesses, community organizations and local leaders together for its International Unity in the Community Day and back to school event on Aug. 29 at Cornelius Court Elementary School.

The event provided students with backpacks and school supplies while also connecting families with community resources, local vendors, entertainment and family activities. The celebration featured performances from dancers with Reign Dance & Complex, percussion by Napoleon Revels-Bey and audience volunteers, and music from event host Sherwin XL and DJ Watts.

Families also enjoyed activities for children, including face painting by Imani Innis. Eleven-year-old Uniondale resident Genesys Romero was among the attendees who took part in the festivities.

“International unity is really about recognizing that while we may come from different backgrounds, we share many of the same hopes for our families and our community,” said Stacey Richardson, President of the UERC Committee Oversight Board. “We wanted families to leave with more than a backpack. We wanted them to leave with useful resources, new connections and a reminder that there is a community here ready to support them.”

The event reflected UERC’s mission of connecting residents with programs, services and opportunities that support Uniondale families throughout the year.
