Community members gathered on June 4 to celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month and America’s 250th anniversary at an event recognizing the contributions of Caribbean Americans and the importance of community engagement.
The celebration was hosted by Apostolic Caribbean Christians, Together We Serve Food Pantry, the Caribbean American Poetry Association and the Haitian Cultural Heritage Movement with Town Supervisor John Ferretti, the town board and community affairs.
The program featured performances by the Uniondale High School choir, including a rendition of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” as well as a presentation by the Uniondale High School Junior ROTC.
Members of the American Legion also participated leading attendees in a patriotic wave of American flags in honor of the nation’s upcoming semi quincentennial. Additional Caribbean cultural performances highlighted the music, dance and traditions of the region, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The event honored the cultural traditions, achievements and lasting impact of Caribbean Americans while also commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary. The gathering also emphasized the themes of honoring heritage and building community while acknowledging the role Caribbean Americans have played in shaping communities on Long Island and throughout the United States.
Clariona Griffith received a citation from The Town of Hempstead through her dedication working with the community.
