I am a resident of the Gibson area in Valley Stream that the Federal Emergency Management Agency mandated flood insurance. I do believe that we have had that 100-year storm that FEMA officials contend would flood out our area of Valley Stream.

There’s little argument that the row of vacant stores on Gibson Boulevard has become the worst eyesore in Valley Stream. The property is a constant target for vandals, and there seems to be little hope that the situation will improve anytime soon.

Construction is nearing completion on the 2010-11 road program in Valley Stream, and when work is done, about two miles worth of village roads will have been repaved.

Windows were smashed and glass covered the sidewalk at the vacant stores on Gibson Boulevard last weekend, evidence of yet another act of vandalism at the blighted property. The damage was reported early Saturday morning by village code enforcement and auxiliary police officers.

At this time last year, residents of Gibson Boulevard and the surrounding neighborhood expected construction to begin soon on a 39-unit apartment building behind the Gibson train station. But 12 months later, the property, with two rows of stores, continues to sit vacant, much to the ire of neighbors.
