On Aug. 6, the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program announced an expansion of its partnership with Mercy Hospital. Their program has expanded to offer free on-site bilingual support services, including individual counseling and support groups, to patients and caregivers.
Focusing on young breast cancer patients and women with metastatic disease, these support groups and on-site social workers are here to assist these individuals at each stage of their cancer journey.
This program continues to build on the longstanding collaboration between Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program and Catholic Health’s Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre.
“The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program has worked with Mercy Hospital for years and played a critical role in the hospital’s National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers in 2023,” Angela Papalia, Assistant Director of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program and a social worker providing services at Mercy Hospital, said.
This program allows the two organizations to work together to provide efficient care to women and others in need, especially those in vulnerable communities.
“Mercy Hospital is proud to partner with the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, which has a longstanding commitment to supporting breast cancer patients through free services and programming,” Joseph Manopella, Mercy Hospital president, said in a news release. “This collaboration allows us to serve more residents in our community and provide accessible, compassionate care to patients at every stage of their diagnosis and recovery.”
The program offers several group support options for their patients, including those navigating metastatic breast cancer diagnosis, new diagnosed patients, young women under the age of 45, patients seeking hormone therapy and more. “We provide comprehensive support groups that are all professionally facilitated by licensed social workers, and we really feel strongly to best address the needs of cancer patients, to offer groups that are specially tailored to those patients needs,” Papalia said.
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has been providing services across the state for over 45 years. Their collaborative efforts with Mercy Hospital started several years ago and continues to grow as they provide more for their patients. They also provide a Hotline from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day of the year.
“The goals are to provide on site social work services to breast cancer patients and their families and loved ones to make it a more seamless process for those who are looking to access clinical support services,” Papalia said.
