Seaford Memorial Day Ceremony Honors Fallen Service Members Despite Rain

Seaford residents gathered at American Legion Post 1132 on Sunday to honor the nation's fallen service members during the community's Memorial Day observance, which was relocated due to inclement weather.

The annual ceremony had originally been planned as a parade and service beginning at Verity Plaza and concluding at the Four Chaplains Memorial at Seaford Middle School. Weather concerns forced organizers to cancel the outdoor march the night before and move the event indoors to the American Legion hall.

Despite the change in plans, organizers said the ceremony drew strong participation from veterans, local organizations, scouts and residents. Representatives from numerous community groups took part in a wreath-laying ceremony, with each organization recognized during the program.

American Legion members also paid tribute to veterans from past generations. During the Legion's wreath presentation, two of the organization's oldest Korean War veterans participated in the ceremony.

The observance included traditional Memorial Day elements such as a firing volley and the playing of taps in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country. Attendees also honored each branch of the U.S. military as service songs were played.

The ceremony concluded with a patriotic sing-along of “God Bless America,” led by the event's chaplain. Organizers also encouraged residents to visit local memorial sites throughout Seaford, including the Four Chaplains Memorial at the middle school and the World War I memorial near the Wantagh Long Island Rail Road station.

While the weather prevented the community's traditional parade route, the ceremony preserved the spirit of Memorial Day, bringing together veterans, families and residents to reflect on the sacrifices of those who served and gave their lives in defense of the nation.
