The Malverne Chamber of Commerce will once again transform the village into a walkable gallery this fall with the return of its ninth annual Art Walk, which begins Sept. 19 and continues through Oct. 15.

The free community event will feature more than 100 pieces of original artwork displayed in more than 30 local businesses throughout Malverne. The exhibition will showcase the work of Long Island artists ranging from professionals to hobbyists, with participants between the ages of 15 and 90.

Artwork on display will include paintings, photography, quilts, sculpture, mixed media and other forms of visual art. Participating locations will stretch from Crossroads Farm, which will feature life-size driftwood horses, through Hempstead Avenue, Church Street and Broadway.

The Art Walk is designed to celebrate local artists while encouraging visitors to explore businesses and services they may not have previously visited. Organizers expect the event to draw more than 1,000 people, including visitors from outside Malverne, who can experience the artwork while shopping and dining throughout the village.

“We really want to get people out into the streets and communicate with one another, looking at art, and going into our shops and services,” Maria Casini, chairwoman of the Malverne Chamber of Commerce, said.

The kickoff Sept. 19 will add live entertainment and outdoor art to the streets. Visitors will be able to enjoy live music, live mural painting and chalk art along Hempstead Avenue and Church Street.

This year’s event includes several new elements, including work from new professional artists and 21 pieces created by students from Malverne Middle School and Malverne High School. Student artwork will be included among the show’s eight juried categories.

The Art Walk is being held as a juried exhibition for the second consecutive year. Artist and photographer Wendy Curtis will judge entries in painting, mixed media, drawing, photography, sculpture, print making, digital art and student work.

The Best in Show award will go to Rockville Centre artist Kathryn Maher for her painting, “Man on Subway,” which is also featured on this year’s Art Walk poster.

Casini said the Art Walk continues to grow while maintaining its focus on bringing people into the village.

“The mission of the 9th Annual Art Walk event is to inspire and motivate people through the visual and musical arts to come out onto the streets of Malverne to shop, eat and drink in Malverne Chamber businesses as they experience a multi-disciplinary cultural art event.” Casini said.

Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy is serving as the event’s top sponsor and is helping make live street entertainment possible. Musicians will perform along Hempstead Avenue beginning at noon Sept. 19.

“The Art Walk is one of our most exciting annual events because it reflects everything the Malverne Chamber of Commerce stands for: supporting local business, celebrating community and bringing people together,” Elizabeth Krull, president, said.

The walk will remain on display for nearly a month, giving residents and visitors multiple opportunities to explore the exhibition. Organizers hope the event will encourage visitors to spend time in Malverne.

This year’s Art Walk will continue the chamber’s tradition of bringing people together through the arts while giving visitors another reason to explore the village.
