Malverne Historical Society celebrates village football history

The Malverne Historical and Preservation Society held its History of Malverne Football event last Sunday.

As part of the society’s monthly event series, the organization highlighted moments from the village’s football history, showcasing them at the society’s historic house for residents of all ages to see.

“Malverne has a storied history,” trustee Trevor Loew said. “If someone walks out of here with something they didn’t know when they walked in here, I think it’s a win.”

Several children came out for the event as well, which featured free NFL POP! and NFL MINI POP!s for attendees and a free raffle ticket for an NFL crushed ice maker.

The society highlighted the 1990-91 football season, when Malverne went undefeated at 8-0 without allowing an opponent to score. Current Malverne head coach Kito Lockwood was a member of that team.

“We just want to bring people together, talk about history and get in the house,” he said. “We just want people to have a love for history and kind of an understanding of what Malverne’s all about.”

The events are designed to bring residents into the historic house while exploring different aspects of Malverne’s history. The society has been organizing the events for more than two years, bringing the community together through its local history, with past themes including baseball, scouting and the society’s 40th anniversary.

“We just had our 40th anniversary in June, and we look forward to many more years,” trustee Phil Ballin said. “We’ve been very successful, and we look forward to another successful year.”

The society also hosts community events throughout the year, including a Christmas gala and spring whiskey-and-cigar evenings. The roughly 175-year-old historic house has also served as a gathering place for community and civic activities.

“This is a very small knit community,” he said. “Our attendance is growing in affairs, and it just brings the community together and that’s what we’ve been doing for the last 40 years.”

The roughly 175-year-old house serves as a small museum and has long been a gathering place for civic and community involvement. “It’s your quintessential American town,” Loew said.

The Malverne Historical and Preservation Society works to collect, organize and preserve historical information and artifacts related to Malverne and surrounding communities while making those materials available to the public.
