Malverne High School sophomores joined second graders at Maurice W. Downing Primary School on Oct. 2 for Be the Change Day, a countywide initiative focused on promoting kindness, empathy, respect and positive change.

The event, organized through the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents and the Shanti Fund, encouraged students to consider how their everyday actions can make a difference in their schools and communities.

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s message of peaceful change, the activity brought together students from two grade levels to explore the importance of compassion and civic responsibility.

During the visit, Malverne High School 10th graders read with the younger students and led conversations about kindness, helping others and making positive choices. The activity gave the sophomores an opportunity to serve as role models while encouraging second graders to recognize their own ability to make a difference.

Through discussions and age-appropriate activities, students explored how small gestures, such as offering a helping hand or showing respect for others, can contribute to a more welcoming school community.

The event also strengthened connections between students at different levels of the Malverne School District, reinforcing the idea that positive change can begin with simple actions.
