West Hempstead students and families gathered Aug. 26 for “Our Story, Unplugged,” a school district event celebrating community connections ahead of the new school year.

The outdoor event featured interactive activities centered on literacy, storytelling, music and creativity. Young students participated in word games and language activities, while Pioneer Sports brought literacy outdoors with relay races, letter tosses, sentence scrambles and story charades.

Families also contributed to a collective story at the Community Story Wall and shared memories through writing, audio and photographs at the “Tell Us Your Story” station.

A storytelling photo booth featured prompts inspired by childhood books, while “Sing the Story” offered songs, freeze dance and karaoke. J. Coles Hip Hop Dance Kids provided live music throughout the afternoon.

Families could also enjoy ice cream and snacks and learn about resources available through RamPathways, the district’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program.

Held as summer wound down, “Our Story, Unplugged” gave students, families and staff an opportunity to reconnect before returning to classrooms. Through storytelling, games, music and shared activities, the event highlighted the experiences and connections that bring together the West Hempstead school community.
