PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank collected 2,125 pounds of food and $632 in monetary donations during the Power to Feed Long Island food drive at Stop & Shop in West Hempstead on Aug. 21.

The donations were the equivalent of more than 3,000 meals for Long Islanders facing food insecurity. PSEG Long Island employee volunteers joined Stop & Shop employees and Island Harvest representatives at the Cherry Valley Avenue supermarket to collect donations from community members.

The West Hempstead collection was part of PSEG Long Island’s sixth annual Power to Feed Long Island initiative, which aims to replenish food supplies during the summer, when donations to food banks and pantries typically decline.

Residents donated nonperishable foods, including canned goods, pasta, rice, tuna and peanut butter, along with household and personal-care essentials. Monetary donations were also accepted to support Island Harvest’s hunger-relief efforts.

The Aug. 21 event marked the first Power to Feed Long Island collection held at the West Hempstead location. Additional collections are scheduled at Stop & Shop locations in Woodbury on Sept. 18 and West Babylon on Sept. 25.
