Seemingly out of nowhere, a pickup truck hauling a landscaper’s trailer pulled up in front of the Brookside School in North Merrick. It was filled with cleaning and baby-care supplies, all neatly labeled, a gift from an anonymous donor. Signs taped to the walls of Kennedy High School’s cafeterias on Nov. 15 did not advertise club meetings or school events, as usual. Some featured a SpongeBob SquarePants character who, as it happens, bears the same the name as the hurricane that destroyed many students’ and teachers’ homes –– Sandy –– with a red line across the character’s picture. Most of the posters, though, promoted a special community dinner. more

The Island Park Theatre Group, in conjunction with the Island Park Union Free School Recreation Department, presented “On Broadway - A Musical Revue” last weekend. A cast of 70 locals actors, dancers and singers entertained the audience at the Lincoln Orens Middle School in Island Park - and the IPTG broke records with its ticket sales. more

Yet another storm has reminded us that northeast winters can be brutal. This latest blast began Thursday afternoon in Nassau as rain, then heavy rain, and then as temperatures fell, morphed into snowflakes. Inch-by-stormy-inch, the snow piled up overnight to near a foot or so in western Nassau to somewhat less in mid- and eastern parts of the county. more
