The Bellmore-Merrick Cougars sixth-grade travel basketball team recently won the Division 1 Super League Championship in double overtime, 60-59. It was the first time that a sixth-grade team took the Super League crown.

Louis Hernandez continues to dominate opponents on the wrestling mat. A junior at Mepham, Hernandez repeated as a Nassau County champion Feb. 12 when he defeated East Meadow’s Mike Tropiano, 22-5, in the 145-pound title bout at Hofstra, leading the Pirates to an impressive third-place finish in the team standings.

Mepham not only captured the team championship at the annual Sprig Gardner Wrestling Tournament with 308 points — 60.5 more than runner-up Brooklyn Tech — in early December, that also featured district rivals Kennedy (third place, 211 points) and Calhoun (seventh, 122), the Pirates swept the individual awards.
