The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is continuing its long tradition of asking Long Islanders to solve its fiscal problems. We need to tell the Board of Directors at the MTA "enough is enough."

Only a year ago, the New York State Legislature was wrangling behind closed doors over a deal to bail out the fiscally troubled Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The agreement, which imposed a commuter payroll tax on counties served by the MTA, including Nassau County, was supposed to put the authority on a sound financial footing.

At a North Merrick Civic Association meeting on Monday, residents spoke out against proposed cuts to the N53 and N62 Long Island Bus routes, local shuttles that run -- among other places -- to the Merrick Long Island Rail Road station.
