Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano doesn’t plan to raise property taxes in 2014, according to his newly released $2.79 billion county budget. His administration would, however, borrow more than $1.4 billion next year to pay for the county’s projects and expenses.

Norma Gonsalves was recently elected presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature. She was formally voted in on Nov. 19 by the Republican caucus, which holds a 10-9 majority in the Legislature.

Peter Schmitt died on the job. The Nassau Legislature’s presiding officer was in the county executive’s office last Wednesday morning, working on next year’s budget, when he suffered a massive heart attack.
