Janice Walsh, of East Meadow, made an impression of her brother-in-law Gerry Walsh’s name, which is etched on the new Town of Hempstead 9/11 memorial in Point Lookout. Gerry Walsh, a firefighter who had retired from the FDNY, spent months taking part at ground zero in the rescue and recovery efforts. He died on Nov. 11, 2014, of blood cancer related to his work at the site, at the age of 58. His wife, Hope Walsh, was among many 9/11 widows who came to help dedicate the town’s memorial on Monday.

Junior firefighters from all over Nassau County recently took part in various training exercises during Camp Fahrenheit 516 at Nassau County Fire Services Academy in Old Bethpage. Marc-Anthony Castel of Baldwin, back, Louis Sabatino of Franklin Square and Nicholas Capone of East Rockaway experienced a warehouse fire and learned how to put it out by using a hose.

Deanna Langdon was shopping the night of April 28 when her mother called her and told her to come home. When Langdon arrived at her house on Davison Avenue in Lynbrook, she wasn’t allowed inside, but she could see that the entire place was charred. Her two-story house had caught fire, and she, her 3-year-old son and her sister lost all of their possessions and three pets in the blaze. more
