Freeporter Angie Cullin, a well-known former Town of Hempstead Councilwoman died this morning, Jan. 20 at 7 a.m. She was the first woman to be elected to the Hempstead Town Board, where she served for more than 20 years and the first woman to serve as Receiver of Taxes. “She was a trailblazer,” Town of Hempstead Supervisor Anthony Santino said in a prepared statement. “She always fought for her constituents and epitomized good government. She will be missed by all who knew her.”
Cullin is survived by her three sons Thomas, Jeffrey, and Patrick; daughters-in-law Carol, Lind Kandee and Delcia; grandmother of Nikolas, Patrick, Lisa, Sean and Ella Grace. She was pre-deceased by her son Richard.
She lent her experience to a number of community boards and panels in Freeport including the advisory board of the Freeport PAL, member of the Freeport Mercy Medical Center, associate member of Operation Pride and the Freeport Arts Council. She also served as the chairperson of the Freeport Parks and Recreation Commission and was a member of the Committee on Italian Migration, the Freeport High School Scholarship Committee, the Association for the Help of Retarded Children, the 1 in 9 Breast Cancer Action Coalition, was a supporter of the Friends of Bridge and a member of the advisory board of the Father Peter Sweisgood House for substance abuse.
