After 13 years of helping Lynbrook students safely make their way to and from school, longtime school crossing guard Karen Rivera has retired.

Rivera spent more than a decade stationed outside Lynbrook North Middle School, where she became a familiar face to students, parents and families arriving each morning and heading home each afternoon.

The Lynbrook Police Department recognized Rivera upon her retirement, thanking her for her years of service and the role she played in keeping generations of local children safe.

“For more than a decade, Karen Rivera was much more than a crossing guard,” the department wrote in a social media post announcing her retirement. “She was a friendly face each morning and afternoon, a reassuring presence for parents, and a trusted member of our community.”

Rivera was also recognized in person by members of the Police Department and presented with flowers and a handmade sign thanking her for her dedication to keeping Lynbrook children safe.

“Her commitment, professionalism, and care for the children of Lynbrook have made a lasting impact on generations of students and families,” the department wrote. “The corner won’t be quite the same without her.”

The department wished Rivera a happy and healthy retirement filled with relaxation, new adventures and time with family and friends.
