Lynbrook firefighters prepare for annual Wounded Warrior fundraiser

Members of the Lynbrook Fire Department’s Wounded Warrior Committee attended the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce car show on Atlantic Avenue on July 23 to spread the word about the department’s upcoming fundraiser benefiting wounded veterans.

The Lynbrook Fire Department will hold its Wounded Warrior Car Show on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Greis Park. The car show will serve as the department’s Wounded Warrior fundraiser for the year, continuing its longtime efforts to support Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior.

Committee members used the July 23 Chamber event as an opportunity to speak with residents about the September fundraiser and sell JetBlue raffle tickets. JetBlue has supported Lynbrook’s Wounded Warrior fundraising efforts for years.

The raffle will continue through Lynbrook’s October Fest on Saturday, Sept. 26, which will also be held at Greis Park. The winning JetBlue ticket will be drawn at October Fest, and committee members plan to set up a table at the festival to sell additional raffle tickets before the drawing.

A group of wounded service members from the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Belvoir in Virginia will travel to Lynbrook for October Fest. The soldiers will attend the Sept. 26 festival at Greis Park rather than the Wounded Warrior Car Show there the previous Sunday.

The September fundraiser benefits Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, a nonprofit organization that has assisted wounded veterans since 2004. The organization supports injured service members, including those receiving treatment and rehabilitation at military facilities along the East Coast.

Lynbrook Ex-Chief Kevin Bien serves as chairman of the Lynbrook Fire Department’s annual Wounded Warrior fundraiser and has remained involved in efforts to support the organization throughout the year. Earlier this year, Bien accepted a $1,000 donation to Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior from Malverne firefighter Gregory Waxman. The contribution came from proceeds raised through Malverne’s Memorial Day Freedom 5K Run.

Representing the committee at the July 23 Chamber car show were Chris Hynes, Chris Donnelly, Jennifer Bien, Kevin Bien, John Obanhein, Mary Cash and former firefighter Chris Ferrara.
