The removal of Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House of Representatives, led by perennial malcontent Matt Gaetz, was disgraceful, and will have lasting negative implications for Congress and the nation.

Nearly 25 years have passed since Colin Ferguson stepped onto a Long Island Rail Road train in Mineola and started indiscriminately firing a 9mm pistol at passengers. Six were killed and 19 wounded. Kevin McCarthy, then 26 and a broker with Prudential Securities in New York City, took a bullet to the head, but he survived. His left arm remains partially paralyzed.
